The 54 km Akwanga road was built not only for today's traffic but also for future needs. Alongside the road itself, ICCO installed service ducts for utilities and safety features along the full corridor.
Key facts
- Service ducts: 54,738.60 m of HDPE spare and service ducts
- Guardrails: 15,590 m of flexbeam guardrails
- Road safety: Safety features and road furniture across the full 54 km
- Contract value: ₦23,102,526,267.30
- Certificate of Completion: 12 April 2022
Ducts for future services
ICCO laid 54,738.60 m of HDPE spare and service ducts along the route. HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is a tough, flexible plastic that resists corrosion and lasts for decades underground.
At almost 55 km, the length of duct is about the same as the length of the road itself.
These ducts let utility providers run cables, such as fibre-optic telecommunications lines, through the road corridor later. Without them, the road would have to be dug up each time a new service is added. Pre-installed ducts reduce disruption to road users and protect the pavement over its life.
Safety along the corridor
Road safety was built into all 54 km. ICCO installed 15,590 m of flexbeam guardrails, together with road safety features and road furniture across the full corridor.
| Item | Executed quantity |
|---|---|
| HDPE spare and service ducts | 54,738.60 m |
| Flexbeam guardrails | 15,590 m |
| Road safety features and road furniture | Full 54 km corridor |
Flexbeam guardrails are steel barriers designed to absorb impact and guide a vehicle back towards the road. They are typically placed at bridge approaches, high embankments and sharp bends, where leaving the road would be most dangerous.
The 15,590 m of guardrail is equivalent to 15.6 km, so barriers protect a significant share of the route, concentrated where the risk of leaving the road is greatest.
A road delivered to standard
The project was delivered by International Consolidated Contractors Offshore SAL Ltd for the Nasarawa State Urban Development Board, under a contract valued at ₦23,102,526,267.30.
The Certificate of Completion, dated 12 April 2022, states that ICCO complied with the applicable contractual, technical, environmental, social, health and safety requirements throughout the works. It also confirms that the contractor maintained satisfactory standards of workmanship.
